National Semiconductor was one of Silicon Valley's pioneering chipmakers. Founded in 1959 and headquartered in Santa Clara, California, National became a leader in analog integrated circuits, and its LM-prefixed parts, such as the LM317 adjustable regulator, LM358 op-amp and LM386 audio amplifier, became industry standards still used in new designs today. National's portfolio included operational amplifiers, linear and switching voltage regulators, SIMPLE SWITCHER power products, comparators, audio amplifiers, data converters, LVDS and interface ICs, and temperature sensors. Texas Instruments acquired National Semiconductor in 2011. Many National parts remain in production under TI, while discontinued numbers are still sourced for maintenance and repair.
