Freescale Semiconductor was spun off from Motorola in 2004 and headquartered in Austin, Texas. Carrying forward decades of Motorola semiconductor experience, Freescale became one of the largest suppliers of embedded processors and microcontrollers, with particular strength in automotive electronics, networking equipment and industrial control. Freescale's best-known product families include Kinetis ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers, the HCS08 and HCS12 automotive MCUs, i.MX applications processors, PowerPC and QorIQ communications processors, accelerometers and pressure sensors, and RF power transistors. Freescale merged with NXP Semiconductors in 2015, and most of its product lines continue under NXP, while legacy Freescale and Motorola part numbers remain widely used in long-life equipment.
